hi folks,

i think it very important to consider witholding info about illegal drug use
(even in the past) from your doctor, unless you really feel it may be
important to your current problem... and even then, make sure that your
doctor doesn't write about it in your chart...

first of all, there is always the possibility (like in the above situation)
that the doctor will use it as an easy explanation for whatever he cannot
find any other easy answer for...

also, most people mistakenly believe their conversations with their doctors
are private... in the USA (and most places with private health insurance),
the small print where you sign has you give the insurance companies
permission to access all of your medical records... and there is a central
insurance industry data bank that shares your info with all of the other
insurance companies...

there have been many people who have been turned down for insurance (and
have had other legal and employment problems) because their drug use history
(or another health problem) was revealed to the insurance companies... the
insurers can directly request copies of your history from your doctor
without you hearing anything about it until some problem comes back to haunt
you...

i know of cases where this has actually happened...
