Tony,

The more I read of you the more I realize how much sweeping
generalizations seemed to be important to you to find simple
solutions to complex problems. This may be comforting for you to
polarize problems in the big, bad West...to point the finger of
responsiblity outward but there are always 3 fingers pointing back at
you.

Commercial materialism is multi cultural, multi national. Even multi
star system if one believes in TV shows like any of the star trek
genre. The Ferengi are the most well known examples, living by their
Book of Profit and their 454 (or whatever number it is today) Laws of
Acquisition. Their females are kept naked and at home for it is
immoral to have them outside the home without the company of a male.
And they would still be naked. I chuckled when the Ferengi would show
moral outrage and righteous indignation when a female of their
species put on clothes. Ferengi males were lasciviously attracted to
clothed female humanoids. When they talked of the River of Prosperity
that flows thru the Universe, naturally ebbing to those places that
have less and receding from those places that have more, I
thought..."Hmmmmm."

Cathedrals of commerce did not first appear magically in the West.
Did not Jesus throw the market people out of the Temple? Selling
religious items for worship is common place all over the world.
Decrying the worship of materialism is an ancient, *ancient* jeremiad.

LOL! Commercialism may be a symptom, Tony, but it is not indigenous
to the West. I found that out for myself walking among the Rose Red
City in Jordan. Tiny Bedouin children would run up to me, beseeching
me, "look at my eyes, look at my eyes!" while holding out their hands
for money. There was nothing wrong with their eyes. :)

People seem to need a common enemy in the West. In the 70's it was
the Viet Cong. In the 80's after the war was over it was Drug Lords
and South Africa Apartheid/neo Nazis. In the 90's it was Aliens and
Government Conspiracy and now we have Terrorists. Expect to see a
flood of movies now about this new common enemy archetype. You can
trace a culture's fears by the kind of movies they produce to scare
us and facilitate the feeding of our own darkness.

Just the same old dark fear archetype with a new face for the new
times. Most people just seem to need a villian to focus their hate
and fears on. People have yet to understand the archetype is
intimately and totally an extention of themselves, seeking to be
integrated and recovered into their Soul like a lost child.

Nothing changes except from change that comes from within. People do
anything and everything to project their fears outward to keep them
from examining their own hearts and letting the light shine in.

I have to ask myself, who in my heart am I feeding? Who was it that
said, "In my heart there is a black dog and white dog fighting"? When
asked, "Which dog will win?" the person replied, "Which ever dog I
feed the most."

Consequently, the dog I feed the most is also the dog I feed the most
in others.

I would ask everyone "Who do I feed?"

Now where is that can opener?

:)
Susan

PS. There is also the same common enemy in the East. What I see
lately though, is globalization and the power of the Internet is
blurring the lines between East and West. At least in the cool people.
(teasing you...:))))
