Who knows?

Where does *consciousness* come from?

What is a thought?

How much does an idea weigh? ;-)

I don't claim to know. I think it's plausible that there is a
"collective unconscious" of some kind. You could even interpret some
teachings of the Bible to yield that. (For instance, Messiah or
Christ
is said to be the "second Adam," and all believers in him become part
of his mystical body, directed by his mind, or the Holy Spirit. If it
is so for the second, heavenly Adam, it may very well be the same for
the first, earthly Adam, the first man. There may very well be a
collective spirit of Adam, or mankind.

However, in the light of the Bible's teachings, the collective
unconscious would still be every bit as fallen in nature--and in need
of redemption--as was Adam. And it would still be a part of the
creation, not the Creator, and thus is not to be worshiped. So I'm
not
one to be in awe of such a thing.

But then again, people coming up with similar or identical ideas may
not be a sign of a collective
anything, just a sign that we all have a common Creator who
hard-wires
many of the same archetypes into the unconscious of each human being
he
creates. It may depend on your bias. Evolutionists think the
similarity
between apes and humans is proof that the latter evolved from the
former. Intelligent design advocates might say it just indicates that
both species were designed by the same Designer.

Another answer may be that people who are "wired" similarly--who are
of
the same temperaments and process information the same way--are
likely
to come up with the same ideas. I have a circle of spiritual brothers
and sisters who score close to me on the Myers-Briggs personality
type
test (I'm INFP--introverted/intuitive/feeling/perceiving), and we
often
come up with the same ideas about things. Some of this may be due to
a
spiritual connection. (I would certainly hope so.) But then some may
simply be due to the fact that similarly wired people, given the same
data, will yield the same output.

So what do I think about where the ideas come from?

I'm an agnostic. I don't know. :)
