Subject: On Motivation and Gray Poupon (was Re: [K-list] I'm so hot...)
From: v

On 2001/06/21 00:16, v posted thus to the K-list:

I have found upon the road of spiritual development, both within myself and
other people who attain a certain
degree of awareness - an ego and pride and even arrogance about their
"spiritual achievements". For me -
always questioning the motivations behind all the thoughts, words, and deeds
of myself and others keeps me
humble and in tune with the god/ess of my heart, the *creative force*, the -
call It what you will.
When we "dance to the beat of a different drum" - it's always good to
stay in synch with the drummer, eh?
WHY do we do what we do and/or say what we say and/or post what we post,
when/if we do ?
When there's too much thought involved or too much concern what others
will think of us - that is when we
must slay that spirit of Gray Poupon!

"Please pass the Gray Poupon..." - "No thanx, you've had enough - you R
cut off! I hope you're not driving!
(what is your motivation for desiring yet more Gray Poupon)?" "Oh, I dunno -
it matches on my Calvin Klein
jeans and Harley Davidson motorcycle and designer labelled preferred
lifestyles of the rich and famous..."
   "Hey! What's THAT??"
   (looks down)
   *spu-lurch! schplat!*
"Uh oh! catsup all over your lily white toga!! Here - let's add some Gray
Poupon after all - oh, what a pretty
orangish yellow!"
"You Jerk!!! Food fight!! Jeeves - bring out all the condiments!"
*ah hem*
  Lettuce conduct ourselves with decorum...

Motivation and Spiritual Development

"What other motivation could there be that is not reducible to self
interest? The answer is: serving the
requirements of the task at hand . . . The object self can never be
satisfied because its wish for permanence and
possession of all it desires can never be achieved. For another, at the end
of the road stands death to take away
possessions, everything cherished by the object self. A person who complains
of it may be reflecting an
accurate perception of their lives, rather than a neurosis. There is no
solution to the problem of meaning except
to transcend the motivations of the object self. The path to that
transcendence is service - real service, which
means serving the task and ultimately, serving what mystics call the Truth."

"This again is the question of where one's motivation comes from if it does
not come from attachment . . . Their
contemplative answer is this: "As attachment ceases to be your motivation,
your actions become expressions of
divine love. . . An Eastern echo from Tibetan Buddhism avows, 'The more the
Soul unites with that which IS,
the more thou wilt become compassion absolute.'"
