Benoit,

Right on. Grizzlies are amazing.

I recall a documentary on these bears that was created during a summer
in which the creator camped with those bears. He had been spending his
summers with the bears for years and knew many of them by his names. He
had learned to forecast their coming and realized that they worked with
senses that could blow our minds.

For instance, these bears could smell the surfacing of clams 2 miles
away... and troop off to dig them up. This is where the tenderness comes
in: each of the bears had their own method of digging clams. Some would
dig furiously and then beat the clam shell into smithereens. There were
other variations, though, including "Anne's" variation: she would
carefully yet quickly scoop up sand until the clam was revealed, pull it
from the ground, and then ever so delicately use a single claw to pry it
open and then sip from the open shell. Sweet.

One very interesting occurrence during this documentary: the
documenters' interaction with some hooligans that visited his camp.
"Hooligan" is the term used for male "teenage" grizzlies, which are
notoriously erratic. Si, dangereux. The leader came snooping around the
camp, rolling things over, left and returned with his troop. They lurked
about, charging the other grizzlies in the vicinity, running them off,
threatening to do the same or worse to the doc crew.

It was very interesting to watch Tim, the "on screen" documenter... the
change in his demeanor, posture, facial expressions... and also his
connection to these bears. He was in their heads. No joke. You could
taste that. He did something he later advised one should never do: he
charged them, screaming, yodeling, waving his arms. This puny man vs.
gargantuan hooligan. This was also very interesting to watch... Tim was
so in those bears' minds that they read this as a threat from one of
their own. And they left. Quickly.

Nothing like being scared sh*tless while retaining your senses to become
one with something. :)
