You're absolutely right. This idea has its origins, in part, in male power
strategies, and in the fact that Freud was too shy to look his patients in
the eye -- ergo, the couch. Actually, this model is now even passe within
the field. Modern psychoanalysis is more interested in something they call
"intersubjectivity" which carries the idea that therapist-client create a
healing field. The goal for the therapist, rather than being "clear" of
emotionality, is to be as aware as possible. Not surprisingly,
psychoanalysis is being influenced strongly by Buddhism. In my own practice,
I knew healing was not happening until I started to love the "patient,"
because this meant s/he was beginning to open her/his own heart. Holly
