Laura,
I have raised snakes for quite some time until just recently.I have had
mostly BallPythons, but did have a 3 year old Albino Burmese and she was
10'5" when I found her a new home just last year. Snakes are moderately
difficult to take care of(properly). They require alot of time at first in
handling so there is no fear on your part. They can sense this. They also
require specific living arrangements. You must make sure they have the right
heat, moisture, food may also be an issue. Most snakes take live food. This
became a "thing" for me. I started to dread feedings. If they will not take
the food live, but need it warm, you must do the dirty work and then put it
in the tank. Some will only eat frozen......there are so many things to
consider. How about safety of pets and family...is the tank secure(snakes
are BIG escape artists)? My cats loved the snakes...but that was more like
kitty T.V. than anything. They would sit for hours watching them from the
top of the tank or just sitting on the floor looking up!! :)They also knew
when I had any of them out, to make themselves scarce...just in case. The
dog...she didn't even care...didn't notice but one time and that was while I
was dancing with my Burmese for some friends. She came into my living room
and started barking and would not quit!! We laughed for hours about that.
But afterwards...she was back to ignoring them all. Sometimes the cats would
go into the bathroom when my Burmese was in the tub and taunt her. I would
need to shoo them and keep the door closed. AND during feedings...cats would
be remanded to the bedroom or outdoors..they were attracted to the sounds of
the prey.My suggestion is to consult a Herpatologist or even study thru
internet or library......but do something BEFORE deciding. They are a big
responsability and take a ton of care...but are well worth it.Ball Pythons
are mild mannered(mostly) and would make the best first snake. And they do
not get very big.I used to be able to sneak my Sid and Nancy into movie
theaters with me in my coat. LOL :)Good luck.

Love and Light,
Krystyna
