Subject: [K-list] The Right and Left Brain .. References for those who asked.
From: Christopher Wynter

On 2001/03/13 20:35, Christopher Wynter posted thus to the K-list:

For all of the people who wrote to me concerning what I wrote on the
right and left brain .. (and there were a lot of you) ..I am posting
the references to the source of the material .. and a reference
where you should be able to follow up the transcript.

This series is available on video from the BBC

The information on the brain which I referred to was in part
brought to my attention through a BBC Doccumentary screened
on local National TV here in Australia.

Further Information is available -
go to BBC Online - Science - Human Body

I am currently writing a summary of the research and its
implications as I see it .. in conjunction with my own experiences
and the experiences I have had working with a lot of people.

This documentary, for me, confirmed and put into scientific
language, much of what I and members of my groups came
up with from their own deep inner explorations of their own bodies.

More .. it provided for me an explanation of the phenomena
experienced during K movement .. and demolished a number of
myths which are taught as part of many spiritual paths.

In writing what I did about the conscious following the subconscious
with a time lag, my own research was confirmed by story 6 (below)
in which a lot of video was shown of the research on this subject ..
including experiences with people who had their right hemisphere
surgically separated from the left ...

The question which came from this research is ..

could we in fact be merely biological machines,
who simply respond to the world we encounter?

Summary:

A 6 part series hosted by Susan Greenfield (Professor of
Pharmacology at Oxford University), who is a specialist in
degenerative brain disorders such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's
Diseases. Prof Greenfield engages in a wide ranging exploration of
the current neurosciences and today's medical view of the human
brain, its functions, its mechanisms, its unsolved problems, and
the implied meaning of this science to our personal sense of self.

Story 2

All in the Mind

Susan Greenfield explores whether all our characteristics can be
explained by the workings of the brain. She talks to a woman having
brain surgery while awake, and watches the surgeon shut down her
thoughts with tiny pulses of electricity. Then there's the story of
the music lover who had a stroke and can't recognise her favourite
tunes, even though she knows whether what she hears is happy or sad.

Story: 3

In the Heat of the Moment

The second in this enthralling 6 part series which aims to unravel
the mysteries of the human mind. Tonight focuses on one of the most
indefinable human experiences... emotion. Susan Greenfield sets out
to discover what is going on in our brains at times of intense
happiness, fear or even disgust.

Story 4

The Mind's Eye

Is seeing isn't believing? We take it for granted that we open our
eyes and see what's there, but in fact sight is a complex and
extraordinary combination of tricks of the brain. We meet a man who
can see everyday objects but can't recognize his own face, and
another who recognises faces but cannot identify a broom or a
table. First Among Equals This week Brain Story tries to uncover
the unique quality which has given humans the edge over all other
creatures on the planet. Could it be our ability to use language...
to plan ahead or to innovate? And are these abilities in fact
specific to humans? Professor Susan Greenfield will be looking at
recent scientific studies into animal intelligence to try to
discover if we are really "First Among Equals".

Story 5

Growing the Mind

In this episode of Brain Story - a radical treatment and an
extraordinary recovery. In an attempt to treat severe epilepsy in a
6 year old boy, the entire left hemisphere of his brain is removed.

Remarkably, his brain is able to adapt and reassign functions to
the remaining right hemisphere. Dr Susan Greenfield explores the
infinite ways in which we each "grow" our own brain, according to
our experiences.

Story 6

Final Mystery In this final episode of Brain Story, Oxford
Professor Susan Greenfield grapples with he most difficult and
contentious question of all... What is consciousness?

At the centre of everything we do is a conviction that we are
conscious beings, exercising our free will to determine our
actions, but could we in fact be merely biological machines,
who simply respond to the world we encounter?
