There is a gesture unique to Ganesha worship. Do you know it?

I took some students to the Hall of Asian Cultures at Noo Yawk's Museum
of Natural History. At the doorway to the Hall is a statue of Ganesha
(as God of New Beginnings, his image is frequently placed near
entrances). "When you see an image of Ganesh," I explained, "you may
salute him in the following manner. Rap your fists against your temples
three or four times. Then -- this is more complicated to describe than
to do -- cross your arms over your chest, grab your left earlobe with
your right hand, grab your right earlobe with your left hand, and while
bobbing your head up-&-down, and tugging your earlobes, say either
'Ganesha sharanam' (Ganesh is my refuge), or 'Jai Ganesha' (Hail,
Ganesh!)."

No sooner had I given this explanation, as if on cue, a dapperly dressed
elderly East Indian gentleman approached the statue, rapped, bobbed,
tugged, and said "Ganesha sharanam," and entered the Hall.

"Like that!" I said to my students, grinning.

=====

Do you know the <bhajan> (call & response chant):

Jai Ganesha, Jai Ganesha, Jai Ganesha pahimam
Sri Ganesha, Sri Ganesha, Sri Ganesha rakshamam

(Hail, Ganesh, my refuge!
Revered Ganesh, my defender!)

Today is Sunday, which is sacred to Ganesha. Also, the fourth night
after the New Moon, and the fourth night after the Full Moon, are special
days to honor Ganesh.

Namaste,

-- Kalipadma
