Dear Carol,

I suspect we can only change ourselves--although I don't think we should stop
trying to help others and society.

Sri Ramana Maharshi said in answer to the question "Are we to keep anything
against a rainy day or to live a precarious life for spiritual attainment?"

"God looks after everything."

Or as Angelique would say Goddess has it handled. It obviously takes an
effort, not of will but of total surrender to accept this. It is also very
liberating. But it seems so totally selfish on the surface. Shouldn't we
*do* something?? Or is it enough simply to Be?

He has something interesting to say about prayer, also:

"...individuals cannot act of their own accord. Recognize the force of the
Divine Will and keep quiet. Each is looked after by God...As for prayer for
the sake of others, it looks so unselfish on the surface of it. But analyze
the feeling and you will detect selfishness there also. You desire others'
happiness so that you may be happy. Or you want the credit for having
interceded on others' behalf. God does not require an intermediary. Mind
your business and all will be well."

It's the age old question, isn't it! Will things work out, or does the world
need our help? And is simply Being help enough. I dunno. :)) Is *everyone*
liberated once we ourselves are? If everything is *one* I guess so. And
where is free will in all this??

Thanks for the interesting questions!

Love, Hillary
