Hello Holly and Good Company,

Experimenting with drugs may be connected with spiritual longing, but
addiction is only an unfortunate consequence of over indulgence. We're
not talking about hallucinogens... I've never heard of anybody robbing a
liquor store for money to get more mushrooms, or squirming on the floor
from LSD withdrawals ("Help... give me another tab! I gotta see more
patterns!").

In my case, years of heroin created a longing just to be normal
again... to stop chasing the dragon on a hamster wheel, get off the
street and earn some self respect. Pretty basic stuff, but not easy in
the outlands. Sometimes the journey back home can be just has long as
the journey it took to run away.

Everybody has a different story from a different background, but once
the tough parts are over (physical detox, environment change, etc.), a
great opportunity unfolds. Most recovering folk enter 12 step groups. In
the 1930s, the steps were designed I lead a person to a spiritual
awakening. This happened with me.

I no longer have a need for recovery "programs" to stay off drugs and
this has been very difficult for AA/NA folks to accept, considering my
history. Perhaps some people need to go to meetings for the rest of
their lives, each time saying, "I'm Joe and I'm an alcholic/addict..."
and so on. I think the "disease" identification, the woundology, the
constant verbal reinforcement of a problem is spiritually counter
productive.

Yes, it's good to be reminded how bad things were and that you can't
drink or use again without another dumpster dive to the bottom, this is
true for us hard core types, but after a few years a recovering person,
I hope, would want to expand the quality of their life even further and
look for new horizons.

At this point, the "Incurable disease of addiction" model that keeps
people fearfully huddled in meetings and therapy groups is virtuously
useless. If you have normal brain functions... no better or worse than
the average human being... if you can exist right in the *here* and
*now*... if we can realize that inside we're perfect children of the
universe... then the "disease" becomes an illusion and disappears like a
ghost that gave up trying to haunt us.

You would think that there would be more discussion and literature
regarding awakening through addiction recovery. For those of us who've
had a spontaneous event, we're pretty much on our own. People in the old
program seem threatened by our stories... or they simply don't believe
us. I wish it wasn't so. I wish I could share my freedom with other
people who are going through changes. I'm not sure if I know how......

.........

Gotta run. I get very passionate about the above and tend to write long
into the night about it.

I'm trying to start a discussion forum and a get-together in LA for
people who've had spontaneous awakening during the recovery journey. It
hasn't been easy finding others. When an ex-addict has a visionary
event, people will ask, "So, what kind of acid were you taking?" Program
counselors will tell you to be quiet and doctors will just hand you more
drugs. We have a long way to go.

To kick things off I opened an e group:

egroups.com/group/RavensAndDoves

It's like, *RAD*, sisters and brothers!.... O.k., I know it's bad
netiquette to promote a list on another list, but hey, there's only
three of us and it gets lonely out here. Your insights and opinions
would be most welcome. You don't have to be "in recovery."

So many cookies in the box... (sigh)... alas, so little time.

Wishing you all an early happy holiday!

Paul
