Subject: [K-list] Sex, No Drugs
From: joe Wood

On 2000/08/23 12:43, joe Wood posted thus to the K-list:

In spite of the lambasting delivered to some of those who choose not to
believe that sex and drugs are helpful to the spiritual path, i feel like
voicing a little opinion. I, too, am not a believer (at this time) in the
'incredible spirituality of sex.' May be I have to work out some shtuff
around that issue, may be that sex really is primarily intended for
reproduction. Then, of course, there is that piece of femal anatomy which
has no known function other than sexual pleasure . . . but then, part of
that sexual arousal and pleasure leads to greater lubrication etc,
increasing a woman's receptivity to fertilization, thus it comes back to
reproduction . . . ?

For me, while I can think of no particular incident of sexual abuse, I was
raised fairly strictly in a christian household. As far as I knew until i
was 27, neither of my parents had ever had sex w/ anyone else. When i was
in junior high or early high school, i asked my dad about premarital sex -
he said ask yer mom. So i did, and she told me he must have meant that
there was a time he was drunk and went home with a friend of my mom's
(before they were married, or even dating i think) and didn't know for sure
what happenned. Then, over ten years later, she tells me i have a
half-brother - by her loins. (funny word, that). I was also a late
bloomer, and have rarely placed much attention on my body, living inside my
head instead.

I definitely feel that sex as a spiritual implement is way overrated, even
to the point of justifying pleasurable behavior w/ a so-called spiritual
purpose. (C'mon, most all of us do that in one form or another - it is a
common human habit.) Tantric sex, or tantric buddhism mor specifically,
should NOT be considered buddhism in my book - Siddhartha never taught sex
in any of my classes with him. ON the other hand, there is a story about a
prostitute living around the time of buddha. Her name was Pass-A-Million.
She slept with hundreds of men a day - seems slutty and immoral so far,
right? - but every one of them would leave her loins (there's that word
again) enlightened. Thus this is not to say it can't be done, but that I am
forced to doubt that so many in the modern world are as capable of
enligtening sex instead of purely physically gratifying sex.

Surely, in the end, it comes down largely to intent.

Geoff
