When i had my first k-awakening, i was led immediatley into buddhism and
yoga. i bought a yoga book 2 weeks after my visionary experience as i saw a
pose on the cover and more inside i had been unknowingly doing for years
(unknowing that these were asanas).

most of my initial reading led me to zen buddhism, in particular. as i
studied, i noted that visions, light effects, (blue lights in particular are
mentioned in Kapleau's three pillars of zen, i believe) are considered makyo
(japanese term), deceptions, distractions from the path. liberation is the
end, psychic manifestations are a toy and a means at best, according to my
readings.

i recently purchased a copy of the Blue Cliff Records, a collection of 12th
century chinese ch'an stories, verses and poems, translated by Thomas
Cleary, all centered on 100 koans. I'd like to excerpt a bit:

"Ching is a mental object, an object, a state, a realm or sphere, a
perspective (or perception). . . . When Ch'an students experienced purity or
bliss, or perceived Buddhas or bodhisattvas in their meditations, they were
told that these were merely ching, mental objects or 'states' which should
not be acknowledged as desireable or approved as real attainments ((My
Comment: anyone can see things)), lest one become intoxicated my one's state
((MC: A perfect description of what happenned with me)). Similarly, all
kinds of hallucinations were called mo ching or 'demon states,' illusory
objects or perceptions caused by 'demons' or 'devils' (whether these are
inside or outside the mind is a pointless question here), obstructing the
path of meditation."
