Dear List,

Someone had a question, or statement about Romanian and French. There are
four Romance (Latin based) languages: French, Italian, Spanish, and
Romanian, or "Land of the Romans". That is why they are similar. The
Balkans is strange that way, Romanian is not Slavic, and neither is Hungarian
(being more akin to Finnish). And then of course there is Greek, and the
Muslim influences. Which leads us to why that wondeful little baked item we
have for breakfast is called a 'croissant' or crescent - it was originally
made to honor the defeat of Islamic forces near Vienna. In Central and
Eastern Europe one will see in town squares fountains known as 'Turks heads'
made up to commemorate the defeat of Muslim forces.

Sincerely,

Mark Stavish
