Yes Susan, I want to hear. I relate. On the travel basis, I have been to
well over 40 countries and saw the ugly american over and over. It was so
weird how it seemed everyone, including the people being visited interacted
and thought with a set of projected and presumed thoughts to those visiting
and those being visited. I was ashamed of being who I was and tried to
answer the question of my nationality to many of locals saying I was Dutch.

Well, most of the people in other countries don't seem to have this belief
that American English is the only language that counts, so they are
multi-lingual and immediately started talking Dutch to me when I said that.
Taught me a lesson about projections, assumptions, and lying.

I tried telling them I was an American but when I did, I either got spit at,
kicked - leg wrapped around the back of the other persons leg - a symbolic
gesture in the middle east where it is like the middle finger, or they felt
really sorry for me that I had to have a government like I did and be born
into such an unfortunate place. This was enlightening, they, living in
poverty in many cases and oppression, still felt sorry for ME for being a
American. Hehe. Other tourists I was with mis-understood their feeling
sorry on this point to their look must mean that they were really sad and
envious. I simply asked. ps, I finally found if I told them "I was with
Canadian", it was a white lie but I got accepted, - everyone loves Canadians,
they didn't test my language ability, and I avoided the evil leg wrap kick
and spital issue. I played with their assumption and limited English so they
heard, "I am Canadian". I realize this wasn't best, but I was afraid sooner
or later someone would shot me to help put me out of my misery.

I relate today to these lessons with trees and animals and unseen things that
are probably right in front of me if only I could take away my judgments.
Blind furry things and horses, yes, I met them and they love very well. Many
of them don't see me, and many of them do.

Thanks for the post. Love Lou
