I don't think you can lose it, like a wart. You can become less attached to
it, however. If you see your ego, or sense of identity--"selfhood"-- as
something that is transient, like your body, you don't try to protect it as
much. Think about all the personalities, names, identities that you've had
over many incarnations. How can you be attached to something that has
changed again and again? And, will continue to do so as you move on to
future incarnations.

Life is lived on two levels, the mundane or physical, and the absolute or
spiritual. This is why it's great to have a body and an identity, so you can
work out karma and learn lessons that you need to learn. This is also why
you shouldn't be overly attached to yourself (especially at the expense of
others). Utimately you will return to your spiritual form, which is
different than the self that you presently identify with.

I think "losing your ego" really means something like, "Be in this world but
not of it." Then you have the right perspective on your life.
