I was going through some files of my old correspondence and found something I
had written to a friend years ago which I thought might be of interest here.
We were discussing shamanic omens. I wrote:
This reminds me of a true story about a white man who was with his Navaho
friend, working together on a car engine in a rural area of the Southwest.
Suddenly, a coyote appeared on a nearby ridge and slowly approached the men.
The white man, assuming the coyote had not learned that humans weren't safe,
began throwing rocks at it to scare it off. The coyote stood its ground. So
the man ran at it, hollering at the top of his lungs until it bolted away.
When the man returned, his Indian friend was muttering under his breath
something to the effect of "Damn stupid white fools." When the man demanded
an explanation, his friend told him that the coyote had been a messenger and
said it was bringing news, either about money or death. The man thought this
sounded preposterous. But when he went into town later that day, an
unexpected but welcome check was in his post office box. Later, retelling
the story, he said he still could not believe that a coyote could know or
care anything about his financial situation.
True, the coyote doesn't know or care, but the Universe can speak through
anything to anyone about anything. Maybe it was also an omen for the coyote
to come across the two men. Maybe it went back to its mate and told her, "I
just saw two humans. This is an important sign for us, either about
plentiful food for our bellies or about death. And the light-skinned human
did a strange song and dance -- probably means it will rain soon. (And sure
enough, the coyotes dined on a juicy rabbit that afternoon and it rained
shortly thereafter).
