l've refrained from commenting on the Osho/Rajneesh argument, partly because
l don't feel that strongly about it. Hey, he wasn't even listed among
Jerryananda's fallen disciples! His is a different case than Sai Baba's,
where SB's personal actions were so much in question, as opposed to the
actions of others that went on around Rajneesh. (l'm sorry folks, but l still
think of him by this name -- the other one feels more like an alias, a
posthumous decoration, adopted as it was after his fall and so shortly before
his death.)
Anyway, ha ha, it probably won't surprise anyone to hear
that l believe Rajneesh was more likely just one more fallen guru than one
who was intentionally teaching by means of the events of his fall. This is
what l believe, altho l'm not by any means sure, as l don't feel l have
sufficient evidence at hand. l spent a week at an ashram in '86 with a guy
who'd been Rajneesh's physician and had been quite close to him. l felt sorry
for him, as he was a broken man in those days. He'd previously held Rajneesh
in awe, so he was devastated. He was also convinced that R had truly fallen
and was not teaching by this exercise.
l also recall reading
excerpts from a book written about R several years ago. The author appeared
to have rigorously researched what had happened and had conducted hundreds of
interviews with disciples, among other things. He included numerous quotes
that were attributed to R. One that stuck in my mind was R wearily saying to
a senior disciple:" l'm so tired of pretending to have powers and to being
enlightened." Whatever weight one wants to attribute to such a statement, the
author was convinced from all his interviews and research that R was a fallen
guru, not a supreme teacher.
Before making up my mind
conclusively one way or the other, l'd want to get alot more info than l've
had to this point. But for the purpose of the present discussion, l submit
that the burden is on those who assert that R never really fell and remained
a great teacher. After all, we know that insofar as all appearances are
concerned he DID fall: chaos reigned all around him; he owned a fleet of
Rolls Royces, all sorts of crimes were being committed and excesses indulged
in to the ultimate degree. He was forced to leave the country as a criminal,
as l recall. This is not what we expect from a true teacher. l also
understand that the Osho ashram in lndia continues in this spirit of being
more of a hedonistic pleasure palace than a venue for serious spiritual work.

So rather than subjective insights, l'd simply
like to know what evidence there is to support the fact that R planned and
permitted all this to happen in order to serve as a huge teaching, rather
than as just one more cult out of control, which is what we keep seeing over
and over again. l have an open mind about this and will be happy to entertain
whatever evidence is presented.

Of course one can take the position, as Rob has articulated,
that the only thing one really cares about in this regard is R's writings (my
rough paraphrase). l can't argue with this position. That's a personal
choice. l used to enjoy his writings long ago. l confess l stopped reading
him after he fell from grace -- that's just my own preference for teachers
who can walk their talk. But again, it's the notion that R never fell in the
usual sense but intentionally caused this to happen solely to teach -- that's
the notion l'd like to see support for. jerry
