Yeah, this one is indeed pretty weak argument.

He was a smart, insightful guy who made some mistakes, parhaps even
"fell"... so what? Would "perfect" guru be infallible? When I think of
Gurus, I initially always assume that he is some superstitious/psychotic
jerk, who is blindly followed by mindless sheep (not necessarily a
negative trait ;-). If he is enlightened, he is probably superstitious
(which waters down the message). And when I see some Guru actually writing
smart stuff (which Osho did), great. If he doesn't, no loss. I don't know
about others, but I have some difficulty taking someone who calls himself
"Guru" (implying perfection) seriously. Osho admitted that all he speaks
is crap (IIRC), which is a proof of wisdom IMO. In his better days (eg.
Walking in Zen, sitting in Zen) he was a very zen guy.

I don't have an opinion about "personal contact" with a guru, having never
had one.

Recipe for maximum spirituality: castration, lobotomy, decapitation (order
is unimportant).
