Sri Ramana Maharshi has some interesting things to say concerning a guru's
sexual misconduct. [pp 422-423 *Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi*]
"One should not be deceived by the external appearance of a *jnani.* [sage,
one who has realized the Self] ...When he seems keenly interested in the
wonders of the world, he is only ridiculing the ignorance born of
superimposition. If he appears indulging in sexual pleasures, he must be
taken to enjoy the ever-inherent Bliss of the Self, which, divided Itself
into the individual self and the Universal Self, delights in their reunion to
regain Its original Nature. ... All his actions should be taken to be only
divine manifestations on the plane of humanity. There should not arise even
the least doubt as to his being emancipated while yet alive. He lives only
for the good of the world.
Sri Bhagavan ...warned the hearers against the mistake of disparaging a
*jnani* for his apparent conduct..."
That said, perhaps all this ties in with the advisability of not looking
elsewhere for self realization--whether to institutionalized religions or to
Gurus. It would be nice if this scandal reminded people that, as Maharshi
also said: "The Guru does not bring about Self-Realisation. He simply
removes the obstacles to it. The Self is always realized." Perhaps as
others have pointed out, *worshiping* SB has been just such an obstacle, and
SB is effectively removing it. What took everybody so long?
So, onward with your crusade, Tony! Just be sure to act from your own self
realization.
