I have been pondering this question too
for some time.
I have seen that it is not what life throws at
me which is the "problem", it is the
way I react that is, if there is any
problem at all.
What you say about the ego being a survival
mechanism is very interesting.
I have long been observing animals and humans
in different settings and trying to look
at what the ego is and whether animals have one.
In many ways, I believe, judging from my
observations, that the ego is closely
connected with the boundaries that
makes a physical body function
in a not always friendly or beneficial
environment.
Even microorganisms will shy away from
environments that are sensed as being
noxious and uncomfortable and
tend to gravitate towards environments
that are beneficial with respect to food
and other resources that they need for
growth and survival.
The same goes for virtually all
animals, including humans.
The rule seems to be:
"Protect the body, spread the body,
protect the offspring".
To me, the ego is connected with the
physical body and the needs and wants
of it.
I just read a report about a questionnaire
that had surveyed the basic needs in
humans, where humans from all over the
world had been interviewed.
Some of
the basic necessities for a "good" life
or a "good" existence
(I don't remember them all) were as follows:
Access to sex, access to food,
being able to feel safe, being able to
hit back if someone hurts you in some way,
being able to feel wanted and loved,
having a good health, having the
opportunity to still one's curiosity
i.e. have access to new information or
entertainment.
This made me think:
What if ppl did not have a physical body ?
How would the list of
wants and necessities look then ?
Just some thoughts and views from me. :

That could be.
"Egoless ppl" have been known to
forget to eat, forget to take care of
themselves etc.
One never knows if this is a permanent stage
or a temporary one, that the ego does
in some way return when samadhi has been
firmly established.
At any rate, it is my guess that when there
is no fear, there is no death either. :)
Also, I wonder what was left in her to feel this fear
if she had truly become "egoless".

Yeah, you can feel this by letting Kundalini
"take over" the mind/body too.
Feels pretty good. :))
After a while I think the feeling of being
truly alive and without worry,
of just being
is going to be more and more dominant.
:)

Amanda.
