Bravo Wim!
This was true to my Self/God experience exactly! I don't know if the poem
by Hughes Mearns was about the ego, but it sure fits:
"As I was going up the stair
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today.
I wish, I wish he'd stay away."
