Just one more little thought on the subject of and definition of ego :
Since everything is the Self, ego ( and all egos for that matter) are
necessarily part of that Self or cosmic consciousness. The way I've come to
see it, is that ego is just the Self's mostly imperfect filtered and veiled
vision of itself. It's the way identification with body and personality take
place - and if there were no identification at all, I think it's a fair guess
to say that the physical and psychological organism wouldn't survive for
long.

There's an interesting book by Suzanne Segal, "Collision with the infinite -
Life beyond the personal self", in which the author describes how she
suddenly and without forewarning lost all sense of ego and individual being.
She lived in fear and anxiety for years before coming to the realisation that
she had actually entered something like samadhi. She then died shortly
afterwards, and it seems to me that her early death might also have been the
result of a complete lack of self-identification with the physical body and
personality.

When doing yoga asanas or practicing tai-chi or jogging, it feels as if
consciousness actually goes deeper into the body, making it more alive -
strengthening the mind/body /consciousness connection. And that feels pretty
good...

So, I agree with Wim, in most cases the ego can't really be destroyed or
killed, the habitual mental and psychological structures that forge the ego
are just dissolved and replaced by a more authentic vision. Nice thing is,
belief systems, seem to automatically change for the better and more real
eventually, if there's some intelligent evolutionary shakti in the system.
