However, I disagree on judging them by the fruit they bear... William
James thinks that religion must be judged by its fruits, but I think they
should not be judged at all. True religion (of which Samadhi is IMO a
part, even if it's not a necessity) can't be judged, graded or dissected.

Ville: My point is not that religions must be judged but that so
called religious experiences and experiencers do. This ties into a point l
made recently about Hildegard of Bingen having an apocalyptic vision that
featured a Jewish anti-Christ figure, thus prompting her to launch an
anti-semitic crusade that influenced centuries of persecution of Jews in
Europe, including the Spanish Inquisition and the Holocaust. History is
filled with Christians doing great harm as a result of apocalyptic visions
that turned out to be false -- a Catholic priest in Germany in the middle
ages who led his entire town to unnecessary slaughter as a result of one. l'm
sure adherents of all religions have done great harm as a result of such
experiences. ln modern times we've seen it in Jonestown, with the Branch
Davidians and countless other cults. We've also seen modern gurus go on ego
trips as a result of these experiences and then victimize others. We must
make rational judgements concerning both the so called religious experiences
and the experiencers in order to learn and help prevent future tragedies from
occurring. lt's one of the primary ways life on this planet evolves.
