Yes, I'm convinced the central passageway in the spine is vitally important
in the succesful kundalini-process. As far as I can sense it, it's the only
neural path that leads all the way to the top of the brain, where the
spiritual centers are located - no sushumna, no activation of
cosmic/spiritual awareness. In normal consciousness the energy flows into
the lower parts of the brain, alternating between the left and right
hemispheres through the pingala/activating/sympathetic and the
ida/slowing down/parasymphathetic circuits.
Balancing body and mind, meditating, mantra-practice and alternate nostril
breathing for instance, seem to favour overall balance between the two side
circuits and open the central channel. I also think kundalini by itself wants
to go that way, so if there aren't too many obstacles and diversions, it's
probably alright to just let it happen.
