Yes this is how I have interpreted it to be from
the descriptions too.

P. Yogananda's teachers were described as
being able to enter the state of Nirvikalpa
Samadhi at night or during resting periods
during the day.

The rest of the day they would be working
actively as a "normal" person.

Being a bit curious about how such control
can come about, I have read a few old
descriptions, even though they defy words.
:)

One description told what you have mentioned;
when Kundalini has reached the Sahasrara
and is firmly established there, the
ability to cycle from the highest state of
consciousness where all is truly One to
the state of individuality
and back again at will is attained.

The perspective of an adept is also quite
different than that of "normal" human beings.
It has been described as being,
amongst others, a state of full consciousness
and calm. The consciousness permeating the mind
/ body, I would say.
I can give you the URL for a description
if you'd like.

However, it seems from the old sources
that prior to the reaching of the natural
samadhi state, nirvikalpa samadhi
(has other terms as well), there are
periods of intermediate samadhi states
that are different and do not last.

There has also been described, in
Kashmir Shaivism, a period where the adept
to be experiences periods of being There and
not There in an increasing spiral so as to end
up with the It Is All Me conclusion. :)

Also, there is mentioned the necessity of a
"jump" or leap of faith to give up the final
attachments of the mind/body, usually
including the fear of death, before the
final state is attained in a stable way.

I suspect the oddities of Kundalini
happens because we need to let go of our
attachments slowly and surely to finally
let go a 100% when that day comes. :)

Some sources say that Samadhi is not the same
as Satori.
Who can saym when it all defies description.

>It
>never ceases to amaze me, how it's possible to have these experiences and
>insights and then still go back to being the normal more or less foolish and
>restricted social self.

LOL ! It is perhaps better to view it as
some other ppl on this list have mentioned:
The state of samadhi is attained every night
in dreamless sleep. :)

I can only add that samadhi or whatever
(in consciousness names are irrelevant)
you may call it is attainable in the state
of pure consciousness and its small spark,
the witness = consciousness.

Sorry, I do have consciousness somewhat
on my brain these days.
Literally. ;)

Best regards,

Amanda.
