Stopping the mind? It sounds like a state similar to that that is
supposed to be achieved by transcendental meditation: alert but not
thinking verbal thoughts.

It might be interesting to see the results of experiments specifically
designed to measure the effect of client awareness of some spurious
theory with the experimenter in various states of mind including some
where the experimenter is not present and his assistants don't know what
the experiment is about, including not knowing the spurious theory (a
control group).
