Suffering is a chemical reaction in the brain, triggered (normally) by
conditions that are counterproductive for the "motivation" of DNA
(survive, multiply, co-operate with other carriers of similar dna etc.)
It's supposed to direct us to another direction, so that we "obey" DNA
more faithfully.

Single-cellular animals suffer when they are swimming to a wrong
direction. Plants suffer when they are growing into wrong direction.
Bacteria suffer when you are brushing your teeth. Computers suffer all the
time, compulsively executing code, never stopping until the user
mercifully turns the power off. Imperfection (dukkha) is one of the things
that comes with consciousness.

For some reason it is easier for us to mourn the death of cute, sentient,
helpless animals. Their death is the Will of the universe, even though I
would personally not like to be the one giving the lethal shock.

Certainly it would be more comfortable if meat was not available at all
(with the exception of random black market provisions) and vegetables were
extremely cheap (genetically engineered to be more "sattvic" ;-). But it's
probably not going to happen too soon, and until then, the issue is kinda,
umm, trivial.
