Interesting how so many of you try to trivialize an issue that involves
immense
suffering and degradation of numerous species.
Working as a chef and boiling crayfish alive I had nightmares of being
reincarnated on a planet of intelligent crayfish who debated the best ways
of
cooking human in order to maintain the flavor and tenderness of flesh. In
these
dreams I was always pleading with my captors that we are an intelligent
species that suffers pain. Needles to say my pleas fell on deaf ears and
I was nightly boiled alive.
This "experience' eventually had me give up cooking as a profession and
meat eating as a habit. I wonder how the human race would be judged by
an advanced , intelligent species of invading aliens who found us to be
'good
eating' ?
If ever judgment day arrives and The Almighty turns out to be a vegetarian
are we in trouble .
My only doubts involve questions as to the 'design' of our teeth - so
obviously
geared to meat eating efficiency.

If I could bring myself to kill, as some American Indian tribes did, I
could
would eat meat. Many of these tribes believed that if you need to kill
an animal for food you did so with respect and induced as little suffering
as possible. They also believed that at the moment of releasing your
arrow / spear you should visualize your victim as yourself reincarnated
as that creature. That is you are killing yourself.
We have sanitized and hidden the killing and suffering involved in meat
eating to the extent that many children I have discussed the matter with
hold the peculiar notion that meat is manufactured behind scenes at
the supermarket. Often when the process of slaughter is explained to
them they refuse to ever eat meat again (much to the horror of
their parents.)
Nutritional issues aside ( and they are serious and not often addressed
by the vegetation community) isn't it time we all face up to the proven
carcinogenic effects of a constant consumption of meat?
>From a yogic perspective it is often maintained that the consumption of
meat agitates the nervous system and mitigates against effective sadhana.
(I wonder if any empirical research has has been conducted into this
claim?)

In unforgiving moments I pray that consumers of poultry, pork, etc
products
obtained by battery farming are reborn a human battery farm to experience
the
horrors of such a life.

The ecological arguments as to area of land required for meat production
as
compared to grain/vegitable consumption are often conducted on other news
groups - given the perilous state of this planets' ecology this needs to
be
considered as well.(but probably not in this forum)

As we have upset the natural species balance of this planet so thoroughly
we must also ask ourselves how we would manage an environment in which
the remaining animals were allowed to breed unhindered- ironically ,as
experience
in Australia has taught, this level of protection can, in itself, cause
animal
suffering
through overpopulation - necessitating regular culling.

Even though I am still capable of chomping onto a thick steak and enjoying
it
(35 years of inter species cannibalism are an in-grained taste) I cant
bring
myself to indulge.
