Subject: [K-list] Interesting article for carnies, omnis, and veggies...

Hey yall!

I read this article in _Utne_Reader_. So glad to find it online. It
provides an interesting perspective. Of course, raising animals in the
country and having them locally slaughtered isn't the quite the same as
industrial scale corporate meat production. So many levels of ethics
involved in this "debate," if discussing lifestyles can be called debate.
Anyway, it's only two pages and worth reading to get to the last paragraph.

For the poll--

Currently omni, have been vegan (2 years of ordering pizza, half with no
cheese was enough!), veggie, live foods, raw foods, sprouts only. Have been
veggie for the moral stand, have been veggie for the health stand. Find
myself healthier as omni but am concerned, selfishly, about the use of animal
carcasses in livestock feed and the possible health risks to "end use
consumers."

An intriguing corollary, and possibly what makes this discussion so volatile,
is the nature and sense of identity we have based upon our diet. When I was
a vegetarian, I *was* a vegetarian. I self identified and was identified as
the *vegetarian*. Oh, the contortions though which I put my loving friends
and family! Finally, the wise Mullah taught me some manners...or maybe it
was his donkey?

Of course, Mom warned me about "carny" people...

Be it tofu or turkey,
Trout or tempeh,
Beans and greens
Or yams and lambs,
Rice is nice, pasta too...
Some advice from me,
     to you:
Happy Thanksgiving, eh!

Sarva Mangalam!
