It might not work for everyone, but my policy is to take what I need and
can use, and discard the rest. I find little jewels of incredible wisdom
in the most surprising places, as well as those places you would normally
expect, so why get involved with judging the person? I've seen beauty in
the words of hucksters and saints alike. It isn't so much the messenger as
it is the message.

I always like to use Steve Martin's movie, "Leap of Faith" as an example of
this. If you haven't seen it, it's about a con man who runs revivals, a
complete and self-admitted fraud who's in it only for the money. Despite
this, a miracle, or perhaps two of them, occurs through him. The message
to me was, just because someone is flawed doesn't mean they can't perform
miracles--and the other way around: just because someone can pull a
rainstorm out of their hat and make the crippled walk again doesn't mean
they're not flawed.

A secondary meaning that seems to apply here has already been stated by
someone else, but perhaps it bears repeating. I think any teacher is meant
to be temporary. When you leave first grade, you leave your first grade
teacher behind. When you leave your art class, you don't take your art
teacher with you to your physics class. When you've learned all you can
from Sai Baba, hanging onto him is probably not helpful to yourself, or to
Sai Baba. (Just using him as an example, because his name has come up a
lot recently.)

Happy Thanksgiving, all. I am thankful for all my gurus, including several
"inadvertent" gurus here on this list who have taught me a great deal.
Have a wonderful day.

 Jeanne
