<< Humans are, I think, the only creatures to consciously try and control
their population - contraception, pre-natal abortion and, in earlier
 times, post-natal abortion. >>

For a population trying so hard to control it's population why have we
doubled our size in less than 100 years? What other species can you think of
that has done the same? As for speices dieing of starvation....it happens.
Some things become extinct for others to be created.

<<<> Our people live on the streets and we pass

At least, we like to think we have a choice, but maybe we don't.>>>

Well if we have no choices in what we do then God has no reason to step a
foot in our door because he created them as they are supposed to be. if this
is the way that things are supposed to be then this conversation is kinda
void is it not? The original question asked why he doesnt step in...if we
have no choices he doesnt need ot step in.

<<<This is apparently contradicted by the existence of predators, prey,
parasites and diseases.>>

If everything lived and never died then the earth would be overrun and noone
would have a place to live and it would all die anyway. Each gives back to
the earth as much as it takes away. Disease is a way for nature to check
herself not to beat herself up.

><<<< if we were mammals we would not reproduce without
>adequate resources

All other species do, so why would we be different? Like them, we die if
we go too far.>>>>

I'd definately say we are going to far now with the mass destruction we
perform and the wars we wage against each other. Then I guess we deserve to
die.

<<<Or we are Gaia's babies, having a turbulent birth?>>>

Sometimes death occurs at birth.

<<<so why is it god's fault we kill each
>other and plague the earth?
>
If God made us this way, who else can take the blame?>>>>

Well if he had a reason to make us this way who are we as peons to argue his
reasoning? Maybe there is a benfit like you said to our slow suicide?

<<<As things stand, yes I would agree. But the implication of the question,
to me, is: why is life on this World based on predation rather than
symbiosis?>>>

In order for evolution and change to occur things must die and bring new
births. All life could not exist if everything never died. And if we all
lived in the same form as we do now genetic variety would not occur.

<<<FWIW, my personal answer is to stop blaming an external God and accept
that I am God (as much as anybody is) and this is my Universe. Why would
I make it this way? It is an illusion, an invented creation that
reflects my state of personal or spiritual evolution. That's all.>>>

I would agree but for the sake of the argument that was started my comments
stand.
