I am not sure, when it comes to human beings, that "why" matters very much.
There are probably infinite reasons "why" there are horror stories with
kundalini awakening. Hell, just the idea that its related to snakes bothers
some people. But, for the sake of conversation, I would like to put in my 2
cents worth...

Now, these ideas are not linear in nature, they can exist on different levels
simultaneously. The real challenge here is that the words are linear, and
that just doesn't cut it when it comes to kundalini...which I believe is
about experiencing multiple levels of reality, simultanously.

On one level, I suspect it has something to do with fear. It seems like some
people who start having unexpected sensations in their body, respond with a
fear sensation. They get scared. That response is probably
counter-productive to having a more pleasant (ecstatic) experience thru
surrendering, trusting, etc. Being fearful means tightening up, and the
energy just doesn't flow as smoothly.

Fear can elicit emotional response patterns. Some of these patterns were
learned outside conscious awareness when we were real little. And some of
them might not be too pretty or too useful (the image of a snake eating its
own tail comes to mind). Some people even learned to be fearful of the fear
sensation . It's paradoxical because the awareness that the kundalini rising
could offer would be of direct value to the person experiencing the fear
sensation, if they could just let go.

Also I think part of it is, as the kundalini energy works its way thru (and
begins to rewire the system to handle more energy, more awareness), all sorts
of garbage that people have been carrying around with them surfaces.
Depending on their life experiences and how they filter their reality, some
of it can be unpleasant or overwhelming. I personally believe thats its
valuable to clean house from time to time. I am even thankful for being able
to clean house.

On a physical level, some of the spontaneous yoga postures that happen when
the kundalini rises (kriyas?) are, in my opinion, related to the unwinding of
the tissue and of the body-memory associated with those experiences. During
trauma to the body or mind (in this lifetime or another lifetime), the tissue
(fascia, muscles, etc) can get frozen or suspended. If not dealt with that
at that time, it gets swept under the rug and forgotten about. When the
kundalini gets going, it can unwind that tissue (which simultaneously
releases the memory). This unwinding is related to the spontaneous yoga
postures. And all because of the infinite wisdom of the healing energy.
Thank god.

The majority of people in this country are so out of touch with their own
bodies, their own chakra system, that it is absolutely mind-boggling. Me
included. Spontaneous kundalini rising, being esoteric and not real widely
known about (certainly not taught in school) can scare the hell out of
people. They feel & think they're going crazy. There is an implicit belief
system running rampant in our society that says, that if you are not in
control, then you are crazy. That's too bad.

So far, they haven't been able to view kundalini under a microscope. So part
of it is that its not taught in this country on a mainstream level. The
society at large doesn't embrace that sort of thing. I am confident that
there are doctors who don't believe in kundalini and would prefer the term
schizophrenia, psychosis, etc.

Even the people who do know about kundalini, still can get scared. So, on
another level, I kinda think it has to do with perspective. For some people
riding roller coasters is a blast. And for other people its scary. It's the
same experience.

Still on yet another level, I don't have the foggiest idea why there are
horror stories....

I do believe part of kundalini awakening has to do with opening up multiple
levels of reality, simultaneously. And if people can begin to feel
comfortable with that idea, then it wouldn't be such a "horror"ible
experience.

But that's only a couple layers worth...anybody else got any ideas??
