What is kundalini ?

In tantra Kundalini has been defined as :

Stu'lii bhavane nidrita' sa'kundalini

In common language
kula kundalini is called the sleeping divinity.

A chakra or plexus is a collection of certain
glands and sub-glands. These cakras are situated at the
intersecting point of ida, sus'umna' and piungala. In
spiritual practice the role of the cakra is immense. In fact
the most important aspect of spiritual practice is the
purification and control of these cakras (cakra shodhana and
cakra niyantran'a).

In the human nerves various subtle and
crude thoughts are constantly emerging and dissolving.
Behind these psychic phenomena are the various underlying
propensities (vrttis) which are primarily related to the
inborn samskaras (potential reactions to past actions) of human being.

Propensities are formed
according to one's inherent samskaras. The expression and
control of these propensities is dependent upon these
various cakras. The fifty main vrttis of human mind are
expressed internally or externally through the vibrational
expression of these cakras. These vibrations cause hormones
to be secreted from the glands. According to the degree of
normal or abnormal secretion of hormones, the natural or
unnatural expression of the propensities depends. When these
propensities can be expressed we say the human being is
alive because the mind exist as long as the propensities are
there. When the propensities are destroyed human mind loses
its existence.

In the shastras they say that we have
to lift the Kulakundalini from the muladhara to reach till
the Sahasrara: Kulakundalini means coiled serpentine. Coiled
means that the potential energy is in coiled form. It means
that the physical expression the muladhara, svadhisthana,
manipur, anahata and vishuddha chakra till this point all these
cakras relate to solid, liquid, aerial, luminous and etherial factors -
the given fundamental factors.

 Then what is above vishuddha
chakra? There comes the scope of mind. From a point in the
pituitary gland of the ajina cakra the mind is controlled
both directly and indirectly. This is the scope of
expression. Above, in the space till the
Sahasrara Chakra there is no expression, nor does it have
the 'I exist' realization and feeling.

Kundalini transcends all symptoms. If one is experiencing symptoms and
pain, it means one is not properly adjusted between subjective and
objective approaches. That person is seeking physical well being and
material well and has these attachments and that is why they are in pain
or the like. Their mind has not developed sufficiently and so they have
to experience more clash and cohesions (thesis- antithesis- synthesis) in
their life to uplift their tendencies.
