Hello Claire !

"Smoothing the way" was my casual way of describing the long and difficult
process of ridding oneself of limiting mental beliefs, psychological hangups,
physical problems - the works... However if the kundalini is about to rise
it's probably well worth the effort to try doing at least some of this before
She awakes.

I'm a bit reluctant to give advice in these matters since a.) I definitely
don't want to play the role of a guru even if I enjoy the occasional bit of
pontificating (if you all could see me physically, you would probably ROL -
bummed-out musician with a severe cold and a kidney problem - that's how I
appear right now...) b.) there is a spiritual and karmic responsibility
involved - if I told you to do so and so and you suffered because of this,
not only would I have increased suffering in the world, but I would have to
pay for this sometime in the future too c.) I can really only speak from
whatever experience I've had - doesn't necessarily have to apply to anybody
else and whatever I think and say might be totally wrong & delusional...

So, the best advice would probably be to use your own judgement and intuition
in all these matters - when the kundalini-shakti awakens, She will show you
everything that's necessary if you can trust the process.

Bearing these cautions in mind, I can describe what has worked for me and the
way I see these things.

When the shakti awakens, all the subconscious patterns in your mind, all the
habits you entertain, all ideas about yourself are forcefully brought into
consciousness and filled with more energy. For example if you would normally
have sense of inadequacy in some area of your life that you would be only
vaguely aware of, you would probably compensate for this in some way and feel
perfectly happy and balanced as a result. With kundalini this feeling of
inadequacy is first amplified many times and one would feel truly terrible as
a result. Then the psyche's counterstrategy would be mercilessly exposed for
what it is - just the little puny and vulnerable ego protecting itself. This
confrontation with oneself can go on for a long time as one issue after the
other is brought out and forcefully chewed over. I remember being acutely
suicidal for quite a while because of the confusion arising in my mind but
mainly because of the very real and acute mental suffering going on. This is
reported by others too.

If there are physical problems lurking within the system they seem to be
given the same treatment by the energy - amplification with ensuing
suffering...

Now for the good news : once all this stuff has been thoroughly experienced
it's gone - the karma has been burned, mind and body are freed of some of
their limitations and unless you put new blocks into the system you can be
bit more of the true, spiritually free and aware person that in reality is
the real innermost self.( I used to drink a lot of wine and smoke a lot of
cigarettes just to stay grounded and also to take away some of the suffering
. This of course created new restrictions to the flow of shakti)

Technically and in yogic terms, what happens is that subtle energy channels
that give shape to the mind and body and determine what is normally taken to
be the personality and state of the physical body are filled with fresh
energy. After having been given a thorough cleaning, the channels are
deactivated and the energy starts about it's main business, which is to move
to the top of the brain where it then causes the state one normally
describes as "enlightenement" but which is also the original and true state
of the self.

So, smoothing the way in my book would include doing yoga asanas (
strengthens and balances the body, rids it of toxins, increases mind-body
connection, strenghthens the mind and purifies energy channels), mantra
practice (strenghthens and focusses the mind, gets rid of mental patterns
playing in the background), relaxation, some form of psychotherapy (yes, I
believe most people are screwed up somewhere and that's perfecty alright...),
good diet and little poison i.e drugs, cigarettes etc. (I've had to learn the
hard way and yes, there is some hypocrisy involved - however, this is what I
would have done had I KNOWN)

In essence all practices that develop insight into yourself, willpower and a
relaxed & spiritual attitude towards life

Learn all you can about the kundalini process as such so there can be a
mental and conceptual framework you can use.

And are you sure that the person who told you your kundalini was "about to
rise" knew what he/she was talking about? (no offense intended, but as far as
I know, not many people are able to judge this correctly and those that can
usually refrain from commenting...) Whatever, even if there's no serpentine
fire going on, performing sadhana is probably the best thing one can do with
one's life anyway - and if shakti awakes it's the best preparation. It
increases the bliss that goes with awakened k. and limits the suffering one
is usually otherwise put through.

A final thought of encouragement after all this talk about problems - after
having been through all that I have been through, I would still do it all
over again. There's nothing like an active kundalini and "normal" life seems
extremely limited and asleep in comparison...

Hope this adequately adressed at least some aspects of your question

Let's all be free & happy forever

Michael
