<< I agree. I think this destroying of the ego business is just an Eastern
hang-up. Surely, the point is not to destroy it, but to integrate it,
 isn't it? >>

I agree with the integration method of things. I mean think about this for a
bit...Ego is not some massive external manifestation in humans. We are to
some extent born with it (culture and up-bringing shape it). If we are born
with it then we must have it for a reason. Destroying Ego kinda reminds me
of what doctors used to do to the Tyroid Gland. The thyroid when u get sick
as a kid gets larger and can be seen using X-ray like techniques. doctors
used to think "oh god it's big...better get rid of it." Well come to find
out many years later we actually NEED that little piece and it swells as a
defense mechanism. Completely destroying it has as bad implications of
having it too big. The whole principle is not allowing your selfish ego to
control your life.

<<I'm interested in hearing other people's answer to this one. What the
heck is enlightenment anyway? As far as I can understand it, we're all
enlightened already but most people don't know it! To me, enlightenment
seems to consist of simply being yourself and being relaxed about it.
Big deal. But if that's so, why does self-consciousness seem such a
barrier to it when that is part of who we are too?>>

I think maybe selfconsciousness is a human hang-up. enlightenment is seeing
things for how they are and accepting them? Self-conscious is so
superficial i think. Hard to explain that one sorry...but why does it take
people so long to become "comfortable" with themselves. I think there is
more to it than that
