Hi Richard,
You brought up something that I've been thinking
about in a reply to the List about anger.
I think, first of all, we have to define what we
all mean when we throw off the statement, lightly (or
not so lightly) that 'anger' is good. Or it is good
to show anger.
What isn't implicit in that statement is that there
are degrees of anger.
Here, at Penn, we are currently instituting (if
anything such as this CAN be instituted) a campus-wide
concentration on Being Civil to each other.
You are right in that Being Not Civil seems to be
wide spread so that we think whenever we scream at a
neighbor or a colleague for whatever we think is
an infraction, that's ok because we're expressing our
anger.
What makes matters worse is that this anger, combined
with our limited vocabulary is becoming more of a "You're
a Mother Fucking.....etc".

Back to Buddhism for a moment: This problem is exactly
what Buddha was talking about. Even in the Tibetan Tantric
practices that use every day emotions on the path toward
Enlightenment, WARN that using anger in ANY WAY WHATSOEVER
is very, very dangerous. It's dangerous because it is
like Fire; it will begin as a match flame and will soon
engulf one (actually he said something like, "The eye,
o prieses, is on fire; forms are on fire; eye-consciousness
is one fire; impressions received by the eye are on fire..."
and so on). He was referring to how QUICKLY ANY
impression/emotion
can burst into flame/anger.
And fire, as we all know, as consume that person
who indulges in it.

So...to me, our Western idea of anger must be looked
at very carefully, rather than the way it is looked at
currently ('it's ok to be angry') in our culture.

  Contributions everyone?

Adele
