Hi!
   Melissa, my mother tells me that my brother and I
never went through the terrible twos OR the terrible
teenage shifts, either! I realize I'm new to the List
and probably am getting off the subject (especially
since I haven't been reading the thread to this), but
I wonder if it's not a cultural thing.
   I have a lot of Japanese friends (including my sister
in law) who claim they don't experience those episodes
either (terrible twos, etc), but then watching them
raise their children, they raise them totally different
from we North American's (I have yet to see/hear a
japanese mother yell at her kids).
   So, I'm wondering if what we call genetic isn't really
simply cultural.
   One example is that my brother and I are very
nonexpressive
with our arms/hands/body movements. We thought it
must be genetic until my Russian mother pointed out that
this is how Russians traditionally raise their children;
it's considered
a fault if one cannot use WORDS ONLY to express oneself;
using one's hands is almost viewed as a weakness of
character!
HA! She also pointed out to me that traditional Russian
mothers wrap their babies in a swaddling cloth making it
virtually impossible for the baby to move their arms.
it's also said this is why many russians are known for
their eye expressiveness that people seem to notice when
they
visit Russia.
I hope I don't sound like I am stereotyping people by
their cultures. It's just something I've discussed with
them
and it seems therefore important to bring up in any
discussion about genetics and behavior.
What do you think?

Adele (who is so happy to be on this List and will try
to contain herself as she learns more)....
