No, not really.

I did have an experience at the age of 14 at an ugly moment of my life
that seems to have substituted for one. I was planning to bring a gun
to school and kill everyone I could, then myself, when all of a sudden
the blackness lifted and I saw a set of tools. I don't actually know
how to explain it: it was a lot of very detailed information in one
moment, coming out of the blue, and which I half didn't believe in
(being as I was then, and for many years continued to be, an atheist).

After that moment there was an abrupt change in my life. I went from
school pariah to falling 11 votes short of being elected student body
president in less than a year, among other things. I also, ex
nihilo, came upon a remarkable circle of friends. Three of us in
particular gathered every lunch hour to debate ethics. One was/is
my best friend, who has a noteworthy story later in life that isn't
public, and so I won't tell it. The other friend was/is Dave
Kacyznski, brother of the unabomber, whose ethical struggle is public,
unfortunately, and I needn't tell it. While my relationship to these
friends is one of equality, not guru/student, our debates were
formative for me.

After/during, if one counts the above as my guru-equivalent.

What is the difference between these two? How would one distinguish
one from the other?

d... defined here as N/A
