I feel massively unqualified to answer anything here but the question
about autism, but I'll volunteer some of my impressions, which may not
be true for anyone else, and are severely limited because they're
based on a sample size of one.

I think all of this is a natural phenomenon, like wind or trees
or hair growing gray or the sun fusing hydrogen. Gravity doesn't
require that one believe in it or seek it out to have an effect, and
neither does this. In fact I think all it is is just awareness.
Running into it without consciously looking for it is not only
possible, it's, eventually, almost inevitable. All it takes is
sentience. (Not Quite)Instant Kundalini-- Just Add Consciousness...

I have mixed feelings about the religious trappings around it. On the
one hand I think it obscures the fundamental ordinaryness of all of
this, plus the trappings are often vehicles for a lot of cultural
biases and just-plain-wrong ideas that hitchhike on them.

At the same time I understand the point of a lot of the trappings.
This *is* often difficult stuff to deal with. Obscuring it a bit
protects others. And trying to describe things in language-- *any*
language -- is close to hopeless, so if one chooses to describe at
all, one introduces spurious signals, things that just aren't right
but are the best one can do.

In my experience...? That's a tough one to answer, because none of
this really has anything to do with goals, or anything alien to who I
am.

It came out of what I wanted and what I wanted to understand and who
I was, even though it looked in the midst of it like it was some
bizarre roadblock getting in my way. It's not a roadlock. It really
isn't.

In my experience the difficulties pass (I assume that's the part
you want to get over with, yes?).

I have no clue. I have absolutely nothing to compare my experiences
to.

Yes, as long as you don't mind having the life you least expected
you'd ever have :-)

Seriously: one of the most important things I ever did was forget
entirely about getting "past" anything or "having a life". Those
ideas didn't work for me.

Both of us have formal diagnoses in the US, so I guess technically it
would be the definition that appears in the DSM IV :-) You can find
the diagnostic criteria for the various autistic spectrum disorders on
the net at

http://www.autism-society.org/packages/pdd.html

Be aware when reading autism literature that autism "experts"
are as often as not reporting their prejudices as fact. For an
antidote to the DSM, try

and

http://www.ani.ac/

and an interesting essay at
