Dear Dave,

Your story reminds me of meditating in a zen temple in Chicago, down the
block from my home. The small temple was across the street from a liquor
store and in the midst of a pretty desperate area. I was teaching high
school at that period, and one of my students, a 15 year old boy, worked
that block as a prostitute. One time during meditation there was a big
fight outside the liquor store, lots of yelling and glass breaking. We
stayed quiet in the meditation room, but my attention was on the fight.
That experience, the confluence of extremes of human experience, between
conflict, suffering, and transcendence stuck with me. It was
characteristic of my experiences of the time--lessons for me which
eventually would lead me out the "meaning crisis", the spiritual dead end,
to which I had brought myself. (When this crisis got bad enough and I was
frozen dead in my tracks by circumstances, kundalini activity came head on.)
