  Perhaps you are being trained to be a dog? :-)
  I suppose my head would explode if I woke up tomorrow
  wearing a leash, hearing the word "Rover!" directed
  at me, and being patronized by someone who seems to
  thinks "sit"..."stay"..."come" is enlightened conversation.
  Maybe this is why people go to Mystress...

  Or... maybe the ear-perking buzz is a sign that you are being
  hailed by the Vulcans. A 'buzz' rather than a 'tone'
  would be a sign that you have a complex message (karmic mail?)
  in your inbox that extends into the higher harmonics
  (like in 'Contact') so I hope your protocol has a way
  to handle karmic attachments.

  I trust you've already determined that it's not just a bug.

  Do you have 'perfect pitch' yet? If not, once you figure
  out what note it is, you'll have a tuner.
