Dear Antoine,

Good to hear your voice! I, too, have been fascinated by this paralysis, or
what I call “catatonia,” which, for me, occurs during states of ecstasy or
bliss. Patricia Treece in her book the Sanctified Body quotes from N.
Kasturi´s *The Live of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba* that “his body would
become stiff intermittently...” She footnotes this passage “This catatonic
state can be a symptom of severe mental illness or of spiritual experience”

I wonder why you feel the need to overcome this state, as I see it as a
doorway. But I feel it as physical, not mental paralysis. As you noted,
there seems to be a close connection with REM dream sleep in which muscles are
immobilized. (perhaps it is what UFO “abductees” also feel) Perhaps it is an
enforced surrender to allow the body and ego to make way for unconditioned
experience--allowing both surrender into dream sleep or surrender into a
higher state of consciousness. I have, on occasion, equated the state with
“Satori”--often coming just before the locomotive train of explosive ecstasy.

Thanks for the interesting topic. Maybe someone out there can add some
scientific explanations.

Love, Hillary
