Subject: [K-list] Voices being practical
From: Chris Hughes

Dear List
at one time about ten years ago I had a terrible problem with
sleeping due to internal dialogue keeping me awake. I would get
excited or depressed about the happenings of the day or working out
what I would do the next day, so I would be falling asleep just as it
was time to get up.
At this time I started to train to be a hypnotist and brought up my
problem with our trainer Stephen Brooks whom I have a lot of respect for.
He just said "stop talking to yourself" I was expecting a grand
answer and was a bit taken aback but on further questioning this is
what he said.
If we were talking and I left the room would you continue to talk to
me. Of course you wouldent. Its like having two people in your head
both you and while its OK to discuss things with yourself its not ok
for it to get out of hand. So here is what you do. When you have had
enough of the conversation with yourself do not answer the other
voice which is you, ignore it or tell it you are going to sleep now,
but do not answer no matter what it says.
I did this and found it difficult at first but very soon because I
always had control over one voice ( both are the same really) There
was only internal dialogue when I wanted it. There were many fringe
benefits from this as before I would get my bag packed (more than
once)weeks in advance of going anywhere Things had to be planed down
to the last detail in case!!! (of what I do not know) Every
eventuality had to be catered for. I was making my self a nervous
wreck. Now truly I live a day at a time and am on the whole stress
free. Getting control of my internal dialogue has also helped with
meditation though thoughts still float in at least I can let them go.
I dont write often but I find the people here very supportive and
loving on the whole.
With love
Chris
